Smoke control areas & burning wood

Smoke control areas are areas where it’s illegal to emit smoke.  This applies to homes & businesses and to every fuel that produces smoke .

Why Smoke Control Areas?

Smoke Control areas were created to try to tackle the problem of smog in the 50s and 60s.

They’re in place today to try to control air pollution and promote clean air.

Local authorities decide what areas come under Smoke Control legislation. They also enforce the law.

Fuels in such areas

Fuels used in Smoke Control Areas are divided into two groups:

  • fuels that produce smoke: “unauthorised fuels”
  • fuels that don’t produce smoke: “authorised fuels”

If you want to burn “unauthorised” fuels you have to meet certain legal requirements. If you don’t you face hefty fines.

Burning wood in my stove

If you want to burn wood in a smoke control area you must:

  • buy a smoke control exempt stove
  • burn wood that’s suitable for that stove
